Miami Dolphins Training Camp: 8/14

Well, as you can see in the title, I have no idea how many days of training camp have passed, since I've been gone for a while. A lot has happened since my last post. Including the arrest and subsequent release of WR Chad Johnson, the injury of QB David Garrard, the outstanding performance of QB Ryan Tannehill in the first preseason game, the injury of LBs Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett and a few practices. But, I'l skip all that and get to the main topic, today's practice. Out injured were LBs Kevin Burnett and Karlos Dansby, WR Brian Hartline, DT Tony McDaniel, DE Cameron Wake, OGs Artis Hicks and Eric Steinbech. Starting in place of the two LBs were backups Austin Spitler and Jason Trusnik. Ryan Cook and John Jerry were starting in the guard spots. Olivier Vernon, Jamaal Westerman and Derrick Shelby stepped in for Wake, Roberto Wallace started in place of Hartline, Ryan Baker and Kheeston Randall were the backup DTs, while Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore split 1st team QB reps, with Tannehill getting the majority. More information is after the jump.

A usual, I will start off with the QB position. However, instead of going through the QBs one at a time, I will go in chronological order, and then give analysis at the end. Matt Moore got the first two snaps, which were two incomplete screen passes. Following Moore's two incompletions, Tannehill stepped on the field. He got two snaps, just like Moore, and had a nice 18 yd rollout pass to Davone Bess and a nice screen pass to Reggie Bush. In the next drill, Matt Moore completed a nice goal line pass to Marlon Moore, but then had a pass deflected by Richard Marshall and a Roberto Wallace pass deflected by Sean Smith. Ryan Tannehill had a nice showing this time. he started off by a Legedu Naanee drop, followed by a pass interferance by Anderson Russell on Julius Pruitt. He then followed up with a checkdown pass to Jorvorskie Lane, and then a 15-yd TD to Legedu Naanee followed by another back shoulder TD pass from Tannehill to Naanee, this time a 40 yd long ball. Matt Moore followed it up for a 40 yd TD of his own, this one to BJ Cunningham. Pat Devlin then decided to make an impression with a 20 yd pass to Jeff Fuller off a slant. This was followed off a Jimmy Wilson breakup of a Tannehill slant headed towards Charles Clay. During a 7-on-7 series, Tannehill started off with an INT to Johnathon Wade. Matt Moore had a 39-yd TD to Julius Pruitt, but was then sacked by Jared Odrick, while Pat Devlin's first pass was intercepted by Randy Starks. In the final two minute drill, Moore had a 20 yd pass to Roberto Wallace, then an INT to Tyrone Culver. Pat Devlin went 3 and out, but Tannehill actually drove down the field, with 3 nice passes to Marlon Moore, but was sacked on 4th down in the redzone by Olivier Vernon. Ryan Tannehill was clearly the best QB today, outshining Moore and Devlin. Unlike the others, he got the offense moving and was able to drive down the field. The final TD-INT ratios for the day were 2-1 for Tannehill, 2-1 for Moore (who played against 2nd stringers) and 0-1 for Devlin.

Moving on, let's look at the O-line. Some of the veteran O-lineman were sitting out today so Philbin could get a chance to evaluate some of the fringe players. As for the TEs, none of them had really stellar catches, but Charles Clay did find himself open often against the 2nd string defense. A for the WRs, Legedu Naanee had yet another great day, pulling in two Tannehill TDs. Roberto Wallace played well with the starting unit, while BJ Cunningham and Marlon Moore were the stars of the 2nd string. Moore had 3 clutch catches on Tannehill's 2 minute drill, while Cunningham showed some speed on a deep pass from Moore. Jeff Fuller pulled down a nice Devlin pass, and Julius Pruitt shined as usual. As for the RBs, Lamar Miller, Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas all had their ups and downs, but none of them got many snaps, as Philbin was mostly working on the passing game today. Jorvorskie Lane did show some RAC ability off a checkdown from Tannehill.

Now, let's take a look at the defense. For the safeties, Tyrone Culver had a nice day, blanketing Moore's passes and even drawing in a INT. Anderson Russell, who has been standing out for his playmaking ability, had a poor day. As for the CBs, Vontae Davis and Richard Marshall continued to split 1st team snaps, but Marshall had a better day. Johnathon Wade had a nice INT off of a Tannehill throw as well. As for the LBs, Dansby and Burnett were both out for the day, and Trusnik and Spitler did a nice job replacing them. Spitler did a good job covering the run out of the MLB position, while Trusnik was all over the field. As for the D-line, Cameron Wake sat out after a car accident yesterday. Olivier Vernon did a great job in his place, with a   clutch sack on Tannehill to stop him from scoring on the 2-minute drill. Jared Odrick showed some strength and speed, and was great against the run. Starks had a nice day, bringing down a Pat Devlin INT on Devlin's only 1st team drill so far. Isaako Aaitui had a nice stuff on a Miller run as well.

That's about it for today, the Dolphins are mostly looking to evaluate young players right now, and are preparing for Friday's game against Carolina.
