An amazing summer just got even more precious for the Miami Heat.Ray Allen, the league's leading all-time three point shooter,has chosen to join the Heat and leave the Boston Celtics.
Allen did not accept the two-year,$12 million deal the Celtics had offered him. Instead, he took the 3 year,$9.5 million contract the Heat had offered him,thus strengthening the Heat's lineup and bench,while weakening what is turning out to be the Heat's biggest Eastern Conference Rival, in the Celtics.
Heat owner Micky Arison broke the news on Friday night,after receiving the call from Pat Riley, and immediately used Twitter to announce it.“It’s 2:30 a.m. in London and I was just woken up with great news,Welcome to the family, No. 20.” Allen's agent, too, confirmed the agreement on Twitter, but the Heat cannot officially sign him on the team until July 11.
Allen turns 37 on the 20th of July, but does not seem to look like Father Time is affecting him much ,nor will affect him. He made 44% of his threes two years ago,and set his career high, and topped it this year by making 45% this year,which was 4th in the league.
LeBron James and Dwayne Wade applied the use of Twitter to try and recruit Ray, LeBron even photo-shopped a picture of Ray in a Heat uniform.This was followed by a Thursday meeting at the AA Arena with Erik Spoelstra. Allen said he felt very comfortable with the meeting, and obliged by having dinner with Heat officials like Riley,Spoelstra,CEO Nick Arison,Alonzo Mourning, at Il Gabbiano on Biscayne Boulevard.
Allen flew back home to Boston Friday morning, then announced his decision later in the day to join the Heat. Rumors are flying that Allen's choice was decided mainly due to the supposed rift he had with the Celtic's star Point Guard, Rajon Rondo. Heat fans are grateful.
